E. Howard Clock Company – Edward Howard went into business for himself in 1840. The E. Howard Clock Company was established in 1842 and had offices in Boston, New York and Chicago. During the 1850s Edward Howard started making watches with a partner and moved his operation to Waltham, Mass. In 1857, Edward Howard returned to Roxbury to start another factory. One of Howard's apprentices, Joseph Eastman, started the Chelsea Clock Company in 1886.
